Advisory: Read no further IF…

`

Read no further “if this post has reached you during a time of grief or illness.”

`

Use of those quotation marks is to indicate my co-opted adaptation of the morticians’ perfunctory, oft copied and pasted catch phrase; typically tacked onto their tacky brochures / surveys; their dead serious, tasteless, self-aggrandizing advertising blitzes designed to (figuratively and literally) SCARE UP pre-need business.

So, what, specifically, prompted such a visceral reaction?

The emptying of my snail mailbox, mid-afternoon, yesterday.

What I discovered amidst the predestined for the recycle bin, junk mail stack was a 13 X 23 cm (5 X 9 in) postcard:

To: Resident
From: Uncouth Undertaker

BTW, I’ve opted for that UU pseudonym / characterization simply for extra emphasis; not to bury his business.

Nonetheless, I find his impersonal approach inexplicable and ill-considered on, at least, three counts.

  • I would’ve expected far more sensitivity from a guy who I know, personally; who my family has twice hired (following the death of my father and mother).
  • Against the backdrop of our global pandemic, is he not catching those of us who still have a firm grip on reality (in general); on our own sentience and vulnerability (in particular) during a time of grief / emotional illness? Even tho I know no one, personally, who has perished due to Corona-V exposure, mourning tears stream down my cheeks (daily); all the same.
  • One would think that the (so far) nearly 23K Covid-19 deaths, here in Michigan (the very state that both UU and I call home), would already be overworking that man to an early grave.

Long Sigh
