Ed-ucating Words

By barren barons, worldwide, we’re misled
By values-famished, with egos well-fed
By ne’er-do-wells, who had cut class and fled
By those who enrich only rich folks, instead

Ill-gotten loot, rewards rich untold bread
These well-heeled heels, bed hop, hook up and wed
For filthy lucre’s allure, feel no dread
Fiscal fiascos; spilt ink; garish red

The road to damnation, fools fear not to tread
Around science, they can’t wrap their head
No research for vaccine. No curative med
Our health suffers; our lifeforce gets bled

From gross cauldrons, spring pathogens bred
From nose to nose novel virus gets shed
Like a wildfire, contagion gets spread
Dirt naps near; folks lie on their death bed

No well-wishing, loved ones allowed; it’s been said
As life that remains, dangles by fragile thread
When these words were first typed; were first read
Of 6 Million sick, 6 percent now lay dead

Stay Safe… Stay Home… Stay Healthy…

Subtract – Add – Multiply – Divide

The small-minded, ham-handed fake prez can be expected to muck up nearly everything he gets his small hands on.

To try one’s hand at societal problem solving involves a process not unlike plugging the variables into a mathematical equation. Now, here’s why Donald J. Trump is such a lousy mathematician…

Into each equation, without thinking, Donny’s head will automatically SUBTRACT logical, time honored scientific principles and ADD in his incalculable levels of debilitating malignant narcissism, abject amorality, unbridled avarice, corrupt ambition and pathological dishonesty. Whatever non-answer(s) he comes up with will, damned near always, bitterly DIVIDE public opinion and vastly MULTIPLY the problem, too.

Off in the Land of Milk and Honey

Avarice Adulterated Altruism

My local supermarket chain’s owners, at present, are extending a helping hand to their customers, who are having a tough time making ends meet. At the checkout lanes, their cashiers will be asking people to donate one gallon of milk. Even better, is the owners’ dollar for dollar match… to the tune of $20,000.

While such altruism is always admirable, why is it that this very same store’s prices… nearly item for item… typically range 50 cents to $1 higher when compared to their competition?

Why would anyone… even the wealthy folk…. not be feeling the same as poor little old me? Why would we not all be fleeing out of town, to patronize the more reasonably priced stores? I know I am!

True, such a glaring price disparity might be easier to buy into if… IF… it involved ONLY their gourmet product line… i.e., the type of food / libations that their more affluent customers typically toss into their shopping carts. However… this business’ godforsaken price gouging runs both store wide and yearlong.

The truly altruistic store owner would own up to the fact that poverty is a year round prospect and that fair pricing would go much further towards, ultimately, eliminating this problem.

When any business makes its fortune at the expense of the less fortunate, this is akin to…

Milking the poor people dry.

Well-heeled folks can hardly expect free enterprise to thrive and survive
when they grant free rein to the very system that, from time immemorial,
has harmed the less well-to-do. Healing such financial wounds depends
upon thumbing our noses at class war and saluting a war to end poverty.

BlogCast: Tom’s Top 20 Countdown “2” Christmas: Song 14

Have you ever felt that Christmas has become over-commercialized? Well… if it makes anyone feel any better… you are not alone… so do I. So does today’s featured recording artist… the 89-year-young, American musician, singer-songwriter, satirist and mathematician… Tom Lehrer.

Were you and I to ever have the good fortune to meet up with this musician / wordsmith… oh… say at some impromptu holiday gathering… I know I’d try to gently coax him out of retirement… get him to… once more… for old time’s sake… pull out the ol’ piano bench to regale us with today’s BlogCast featured song… Lehrer’s original, spot-on, musical composition… A Christmas Carol.

Of course… considering how that above partay scenario exists only in my fantasyland… to hear Tom playing the 88’s and singing his heart out, we’ll simply need to click onto that YouTube vid’s playback button.

My owning both vinyl and CD copies of two of Lehrer’s 1960s era albums, I am well acquainted with his wit and wisdom. So, I can fully attest to the fact that this particular track will totally meld with one’s yearnings to reconnect to the true meaning of Christmas. Or, to put that into more secular terminology… to reconnect to respect and love for humankind.

There’s little doubt in my mind that there are multiple billions of kindhearted, non-Christians and agnostics… spanning all across our globe… who feel that respect and love.

To demonstrate how… with the passage of time… Lehrer’s music has become a cultural crossover phenomenon, I’m also including a cover of this same track, performed by David Quah, a man who totally digs where Mr. Lehrer’s head is at… a man who has learned all his mentor has taught him… and learned it well. Don’t miss Quah’s impressive rendition.

Just for the record… I’m not channeling Charles Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge. I’d never bleat out, “Bah! Humbug!” towards families and friends who are exchanging Christmas presents. However…

What life has taught me is that long after the festive wrapping paper, fancy bows and gift boxes have been stuffed into the recycling bin… long after the gifts, themselves, are forgotten… oh… say… the clothing which has faded / frayed / become unfashionable and high tech gizmos / gadgets which have malfunctioned / melted down / become obsolete… it’ll be our cherished memories of all who are near and dear to us… the family reunions and holiday parties we attended in days of yore… which will endure… perhaps through eternity.

More to the point…

The best present anyone could ever present to anyone near and dear to them, would be to say, with sincerity, “I love you” and to express those three magic words not just during the holidays but all year round.

On a more personal note…

I wish all of my readers, followers, and BlogCast listeners

Happy Holidays / Merry Christmas!

I’d also like to express my gratitude to all who are spending their precious time listening to my “Top 20 Countdown “2” Christmas”… a musical mix featuring a blend of spiritual content, social commentary, secular…and yes… even some humorous elements. My plan is to get as many of us into the holiday spirit as is possible. Towards that future, I’ll continue presenting my selections… classics all… counting ‘em down one-a-day… from now until we reach #1 on the 25th.

So… be sure to stop back here again… if not daily… schedule your return visits as often as your time permits.

I’d also like to invite you to click back for my regular monthly BlogCast… one that typically features anywhere from 3 to 5 segued songs… this program slated to hit the www “airwaves” on Sunday, December 24, 2017.

FYI, my past musical presentations are archived within my BlogCast and music categories.

My Sanctuary City’s 5-Star Bistro / Birthing Centre

For the past several weeks, quite by surprise, I’ve found myself wearing a diverse array of occupational hats… e.g., proprietor/head chef of a five star bistro (which I hadn’t even known I owned)… silent partner of a suddenly “christened”, necessity is the mother of invention, birthing center… and mayor of a sanctuary city, as it were.

Now, lest I needlessly raise the hackles of overly zealous U.S. federal ICE agents and my own home state’s inspectors of eateries and medical facilities … it is with both sudden alarm and alacrity that I must point out that the hungry patrons (inclusive of a new mom) are none other than a family of rabbits. 1

Undoubtedly, these refugees had been displaced by urban sprawl… the dirty deeds of avarice driven, excessively capitalistic fools… i.e., those who have yet to “meet” a natural, pristine parcel of land that they would not hesitate to violate.

Yes, I do get it… with the level of our global human population on the rise, there is a real need to construct new housing. Even so, would not renovating rather than razing existing homes and apartments slow that sprawl and, in the same breath, be far friendlier to the environment? Would that not show proper consideration for the rabbits and other creatures, which humans are supposed to live in harmony with?

After all, every living organism has a purpose… provides a natural balance within our Creator’s (or if you’d prefer, Ma Nature’s) grand scheme. One would think that in the interest of interspecies amity, humans, allegedly the smartest creatures of all, could find it within their heads and hearts to favor the carrot over the stick?

One wonders if humankind will realize this stark reality soon enough to avert an environmental cataclysm? Time will tell… but… alas… time is also running out… rapidly.

Well, this kindly “mayor” has opted for the carrot… as it were… to welcome my newfound rabbit pals and what a pleasant experience co-existence has been for all. Each new day we’ve been sharing our sit down breakfasts and suppers together… I at my dining room table, indoors, while they’re nibbling away at whatever they choose, al fresco.

As for their specific dietary requirements, most of the lush, verdant, naturally, abundantly growing vegetation within my backyard provides them an “all you can eat” vast smorgasbord of culinary delights.

As for their delivery room / maternity ward needs, mother, instinctively, knows best.

So you can clearly see, my new furry friends are no trouble… not in the least.

Of course, I don’t take my newfound “mayoral” duties lightly. I have felt one overriding concern… namely, unless it’s found within the vegetation, itself, what and where is their water source? Albeit briefly, just as many a restaurateur would do, I did think about setting their “table” with a few shallow containers of water but… factoring in my legitimate worries about standing, summertime H2O being a breeding ground for disease carrying mosquitos (perhaps even inclusive of the Zika virus), “quick as a bunny”, I wisely nixed that notion.

Of course I had actually had nothing to worry about. If needed, located less than a kilometer down the road, there is a creek, which could amply quench their thirsts. For them, the travel time would be no prob, either. On the rare occasions where I’ve unintentionally spooked them, watching them race away in a blur, indeed, establishes how well deserved their “quick as a bunny” reputation truly is.

But even so, that short distance does seem a long way to go. Why would they prefer moving into my yard rather than dwelling closer to that stream? And why my yard vs. the yards of my next-door neighbors?

I think it’s fair to conclude that rabbits find better tasting vegetation growing within my “sanctuary city”. How could they not? Unlike far too many urbanites ISO the picture perfect lawn, I believe stinky lawn chemicals are a bane… not a boon… are likely carcinogens, too.

The perceptive nature of rabbits amply proves they are not dumb bunnies.

NOPE, such nomenclature would be far more appropriate in describing the money-grubbing, land grabbing developers, who so thoughtlessly (oft needlessly) invade and pave over natural habitats. And the same goes for the lawn chemical industry, which (soon afterwards) steps in to con ill-informed new (and current) homeowners into poisoning our entire planet.

1 Please keep in mind that my intent is not to trivialize the suffering of human war refugees and émigrés. Indeed, I believe this blog will demonstrate how man’s inhumanity to man knows no bounds.

1-21-17: My Two Cents’ Worth… A Penny For Your Thoughts?

The wealth of a nation is not measured solely in soulless dollars and cents.

DISCLAIMER: With seven+ billion souls inhabiting our world I’d never claim to be the first person to have ever opined, proclaimed, penned, published and/or posted a sentiment along these lines.

Nevertheless, that’s my two cents’ worth.

Do you agree? Disagree? Like? Dislike? In other words…

A penny for your thoughts?
