We are the Bug! Resistance IS Futile!

In many a Sci-Fi flick, in particular, where extraterrestrials attempt their hostile takeover of Earth, the typical narrative becomes laser focused upon unified humanity valliantly and relentlessly battling the common enemy; and more to the point, good terrestrials whupping evil extraterrestrial butt.

Instantly coming to mind is the typical Star Trek starship captain’s phaser focused response to the following, ominous, otherworldly, deadpanned subspace radio transmission:

“We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ship(s). We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.”

Were something similar to ever go down during our 21st century, life and times…

Whoa! WTF am I saying?

Something comparable has occurred and, as I type and you read, is still afoot; or more aptly, epidemiologically stated, is still in the air; literally so.

While, what we Earthlings have been facing down does not involve relentless Borg nanoprobes interminably infiltrating our bloodstreams, nonetheless, in this particular instance, ever since late 2019, a terrestrial hostile takeover has been underway; our common enemy being coronavirus.

One wonders why, within our Covid-19 embattled real world, we have lowered our shields. Why there’s been such a craven, haphazard response when it comes down to conquering what, in essence, is a mindless microbe; a virus so stupid, it’ll even settle for the way we adapt to service it; i.e., via our host bodies morphing into its ad hoc incubators; and in the process, sickening us; far too often, sickening us to death.

Just how mindless is that damned pathogen? Why, it doesn’t even mind if, in snuffing us out, it snuffs itself out, too.

The irony here is how, all along, it has been incredibly easy for humankind to prevail.

With nary one starship phaser blast or launched photon torpedo, by now, we could’ve conquered Corona-V; by consistently social distancing / isolating and masking up. Or, had spines and stout hearts been truly in this fight, right from the get-go, we could’ve locked down the whole world and, sans any “Warp Speed” vaccines at all, deep-sixed this godforsaken microorganism within a few weeks; a couple of months tops.

Imagine, we could’ve all reclaimed our lives by the March 2020 Equinox.

Consider, too, how we could’ve saved a sizeable percentage of the known 3 Million pandemic fatalities (and still counting).

With few exceptions, I’d rank Earthlings’ pandemic intervention tactics (in essence our response to that “We are the Bug” transmission) as pathetic; something akin to Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard obsequiously, cowardly, ignorantly and promptly silencing the Red Alert Klaxons, powering down all of the WMD at his disposal and eagerly rolling out the red carpet to the Borg Queen, herself; and in the process, facilitating her assimilation of humankind.

Do Not B.S. and P.O. Picard!

Suggestion… either read along while playing back the above orchestral performance… or not…

Ever since the September 8, 1966 birth of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek Universe, this visionary man has provided Sci-Fi screenwriters a golden opportunity to [1] offer up their parable-like morals and [2] present their problem solving models to put them into practice.

Against Roddenberry’s futuristic backdrop of the United Federation of Planets… a macrocosm of the United States of America… Sci-Fi does have the potential…

“To boldly go where no one has gone before.”

This genre liberates writers, with spines, scruples and the drive to go the extra mile (kilometer / light-year / parsec), to tackle more down-to-Earth, present-day, contentious issues. For over half a century, now, there have been plenty of small and big screen storylines to offer a glimmer of hope to the casual and chronic Trekkers, alike… to inspire humanity to Think Big!

Indisputably, one of Star Trek’s most honorable, admirable and recognizable characters is Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Upon hearing his take-no-crap-from-anybody, soul searching sermons, wrongdoers (oft instantly) feel strongly compelled to mend their errant and/or evil ways.

Let’s take a closer look at our two, featured, Next Generation, YouTube clips. For anyone who has yet to watch the full TV episodes, you are now linked to the plot synopses… SPOILERS AND ALLThe First Duty and The Pegasus. No time? Spare me the details, you say? Not to worry, the remainder of this post can get you up to Warp 9.9 speed.

Each video vignette features a Picard subordinate who has [1] demonstrated ferocious, misguided loyalty to a flagrantly lawless, egotistical superior officer, [2] this heedless allegiance has resulted in the needless loss of life, [3] via the deliberate suppression of the truth, he has participated in a self-serving conspiracy to cover up and bury the facts, which a subsequent Star Fleet investigation is so desperately in search of and [4] the inquisitors all suspect they are being lied to / BS’d.

The First Duty

The Pegasus

When Picard’s independent inquests uncover truth’s distortion / demolition, he becomes rightfully and royally PO’d. He instinctively, instantly sets aside his role as galactic explorer in order to preserve, protect and defend Federation rules and regs (an interstellar “United States” Constitution). As for anyone who has the unmitigated gall to subvert such ideals… be they an ethically adrift subordinate or superior… they will incur the Captain’s unmitigated wrath until, somehow, someway, they can manage to relocate their moral compasses… realign / re-calibrate their moral sensors.

Since Sci-Fi does have the potential “To boldly go where no one has gone before,” let’s apply this to today’s front page news.

Would it not be totally sensational for we, the multiple billions of ethical folks… worldwide… to ear and eyewitness Patrick Stewart reprising his Star Trek role… delivering, yet, another passionate, stern sermon… in this instance… directed squarely at the U.S Senate… just prior to the kickoff of Trump’s Impeachment Trial.

It is conceivable that Mr. Stewart could stare down and scare the crap out of the wayward, devoid of all ethics, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his like-minded, mindless throng of hardcore strange… REALLY STRANGE… bedfellows of Donald J. Trump… i.e., convince them to [1] mend their evil ways, [2] honor their Oath of Office, [3] conduct a fair and impartial hearing and [4] if (IF?) convicted, grant the fake prez his much deserved, Constitutional Ouster!

Stable Genius Randy Rainbow ~ (NSFW) Vid of the Day

The Major-General’s Song from The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan… already a catchy tune in itself… does truly lend itself to the parodies of most sharp-witted songsmiths.

I had actually first heard Sixties era spoofer Tom Lehrer’s rendition titled, The Elements, long before becoming aware of the original Major-General’s Song.

SIDEBAR: Another G & S composition from H.M.S. Pinafore, even got incorporated into the plot of the big screen, Star Trek flick, Insurrection.

Well, it was during one of my recent, (nearly daily) YouTube talent searches, that I had the good fortune of stumbling onto the genuinely, stable genius of Randy Rainbow and his spot on, musical op-ed piece regarding the present-day, UN-stable, Odious Oval Office Occupant.

As for the NSFW aspect to his lyrics, it’s all quite mild… mere clinical, textbook terminology straight out of Gray’s Anatomy. In an era where broadcast journalists have been left little choice but to quote, on air, the unexpurgated, un-presidential vulgar language, one would expect that, by now, most of us would’ve become fully desensitized. But, to keep it totally real, RR’s parody is far from obscene when juxtaposed to the obscene admin headed by…

THAT brown shirted, white sheeted, robber-baron Putin hugger… THAT fear/warmongering, saber rattling, nuclear madman/gun nut… THAT slayer of Lady Liberty and Mother Nature, mocker of the disabled, aged and infirm, loather of LGBTQs and abuser of women and children!

Not much else to add… save to say… Step #1 in chasing away the blues is to marginalize / lampoon whatever is causing these blahs. True… I am not really a shrink… I just play one on the www. Nonetheless, I regard Mr. Rainbow’s wild rollercoaster ride upon the musical clefs as a surefire, overall mood elevator. My Rx to you is to listen to his performance as many times as is necessary.

Once we roar with laughter and soar miles above Donny Downer’s Downward Dive into the Dark Ages, Depression and Despotism, we can renew our faith in English theologian Thomas Fuller’s proverb… “It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth”… oft contemporized thusly… “The darkest hour is just before the dawn”.

At that point, we can restore our sky’s the limit belief that… somewhere out there… the dawn of a new day / a new era exists. There can be a rebirth of the America… as envisioned by our Founding Fathers… so long ago.
