Is It Too Late To “Do The Other Things”?

We’re within mere days of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s Neil Armstrong taking his “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”… thereby becoming the first (known) human to set foot on the Moon.

Not long after that astounding technological achievement, we were told that the prevailing mood throughout America had changed. In short… it had morphed into…

“Been there done that! (insert yawn) Now let’s solve problems on Earth!”

Granted, that second sentiment could be deemed a valid point. However, I’d sure as hell like to know what problems we’ve actually solved in the past half century? What about this unresolved 1 – 2 punch…

• Vying, meddling, outsider asshat leaders are hell bent on conquering the Middle East.
• Environmental damage has become so severe that, by 2050, Earth will become uninhabitable.

Of course, there is an inextricable link between those bullet-pointed, seemingly disparate issues.

That link is us. Too damned many of us are oil junkies, which leaves our leaders little choice but to risk going to war with oil-rich nations… just to secure us our “fixes”. And once we “catch that buzz” and hit the road in our gas guzzlers and heat / cool our energy inefficient homes, we’ll also be stomping our massive carbon footprints all over the Earth… trampling it to death!

Folks, that’s effing pathetic. And while what I’m about to say may sound cliche… damn it… I’ll say it anyway.

If we can put a man on the moon why the hell can’t the white dove of peace, someday, soar through Earth’s clean, clear skies… not only over the Middle East but worldwide?

Truth be told… if we had wanted it to be that way… we could’ve made it so.

The tragedy… this could’ve been “mission accomplished” decades ago. Had we applied and expanded upon that same Apollo technology and resolve, by now we could’ve been depending on a planetary network of solar energy collectors, which spew zero Carbon Dioxide.

Had that happened, today’s news headlines would not be all about little boy Trumpian aggression escalating Iranian / American hostilities and small thinking Trumpian “clean coal” nonsense and negligence precipitating environmental ruin and the destruction / death of our entire planet. But we chose to do nothing this past half century.

So, is it too late to undo the damage? Well to do so would require a visionary leader. On May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy said…

“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too.”

That brilliant, insightful man could even foresee applying human know-how and resolve beyond our lunar ambitions. He actually said, “do the other things”!

“DO THE OTHER THINGS!!!”

A visionary President could reread Kennedy’s words… slightly revise and positively react to set a new goal:

“We choose to pursue Clean Energy Independence in the next decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too.”

So who might that new, visionary leader be? Considering DC’s political climate change ever since January 20, 2017… no names come to mind.

Two MUST SEE Dress for Regress Videos!

Subtitle: Vid(s) of the Day

A few days ago, while chatting on the phone with my nonagenarian next-door neighbor, we soon discovered how we’ve both been ruminating re the sorry state of our homeland and world. More to the point…

We share the POV that the Trumpian / Dystopian cancer has been rearing its ugly head… indeed taking root… primarily because too many of our compatriots are absolutely clueless regarding what Real American Values actually are / what basic human decency truly involves. I could go into a litany of the particulars, but will reserve such a discussion for another blog… another day.

Anyway… after a few moments of silence… I realized we were both pretty much bummed out. So, to slightly lighten things up, I half joked that… considering our homeland’s plunge into Donny’s bottomless pit of ignorance (e.g., [1] his being all fired up on “clean” coal, [2] his flat-out refusal to respect time-honored scientific principles, etc.) it’d be wise for we, who debunk Donny… to… at the very least… visually fit in with his retrograde society’s motif.

And follks… most assuredly… I’m already on top of that! For starters, I’ve been letting my grey beard grow long and wild.¹ Indeed, I could already easily blend in amongst a gathering of Dark Ages men.

Hey, who knows? That, alone, could easily save my very life. Think about it. You never know when Nazi Donny will start rounding up the scientifically inclined folks, intern us in concentration camps, put us on trial for heresy and burn us all at the stake. Whew… now that’s what I’d call a witch-hunt! Yeah, yeah, I know I’m conflating the Dark Ages / Colonial / WW-II eras, but… that too… serves a purpose… namely… to point out that those who fail to learn from history, stupidly, repeat it!

Naturally, we, who hope to blend in, will also need to conform to a period-consistent dress code… so… to that end…

As a public service… and to further everyone’s assimilation into Donny’s Dark Ages… I’m providing the following two dress for regress videos… based on illustrations in the Luttrell Psalter

Ladies first…

As for the ploughmen…

¹ At present my beard measures out somewhere between retired CBS Late Show comedian David Letterman’s… but has not yet attained the ZZ Top range.

Vid of the Day ~ Thank-you Mr. Colbert!

I found Stephen Colbert’s above video yesterday… mere hours after posting my own blog on the same topic. His echoing and expanding upon my own sentiments has been both a validating and enlightening experience. Hopefully, you will feel similarly.

Although this was Colbert’s Father’s Day message to my homeland and our world, his words need to be heard for as long as it takes for Trump’s diehard supporters to, once again, embrace true American values… to reclaim their minds, hearts and souls.

Regardless of political stripe, everyone must feel horror and disgust each and every time we eyewitness Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions prioritizing… over everything else… their “white bread only world”. Each and every time we eyewitness them trotting out their zero tolerance immigration policy. Each and every time we eyewitness their deployed, uniformed, mindless minions traumatizing immigrant children by wrenching them from their fathers’ and mothers’ loving, hugging arms. Each and every time we eyewitness these innocent kids being imprisoned… maybe forever… within concentrations camps.

What is to happen to these detainees… in particular the younger ones? Will Fascist papa Trump morph them into mercenaries to fight in wars against enemies of his own making? Will these young soldiers help “their Daddy” prop up his scum of the earth, murderous dictator pals? Might First Daughter and Fashionista Ivanka wind up exploiting them as third world sweatshop, slave labor?

Can we not see the historical parallels here, folks? Nearly eight decades ago, the scramble-brained, mad dog Adolf Hitler, also attempted to establish his “master race”, barked out his marching orders to his mindless minions AND backed all that up with gas chambers and crematoria.

Is our world on the cusp of a Holocaust redux? So far… the one missing Trumpian element involves those gas chambers and ovens / crematoria. Of course, seeing how Der Führer did make a 2016 campaign promise to Kentucky and West Virginia miners… his 21st century equivalent will likely be fired up with his “clean” coal.

ADDENDUM: I do thank whoever may’ve clicked by today for both your indulgence and endurance. Believe me I know… first hand… all about debilitating Trump fatigue. I’m fully aware of how difficult it must be for you to be reading such a post. After all, it’s no fun to be reminded of our shared distress. Don’t we all yearn for at least one Trump-free news cycle?
