Fortune Cookie Blog (First they came…)

A Martin Niemöller moment for all who empower & embolden the emperor,
who discriminates; exiles racial, ethnic & religious minorities from his empire.
Who will he deport next? Journalists? Critics? Educators? Scientists? Labor
Unionists? The aged & ailing? The deaf & blind? The poor & homeless? His
#MeToo accusers? LGBTQIA’s? All who fail to tithe him 90% of their income?
Might he, on mere whim, randomly pick & choose to exile others; e.g. YOU?

The Rudderless U.S.S. America

It’d be impossible for all who truly love the real America not to be concerned about what’s been going down here and abroad since last Friday. All of us, who can still think clearly, have become worried sick watching the rudderless ship… the U.S.S. America… seriously off course and getting battered by a raging storm… and rapidly taking on water.

Dissenters’ words and deeds have been akin to fired off distress flares but has anyone even noticed them? Does anyone even perceive the dangers we do… understand our ship is sinking?

Or are genuine, dutifully dissenting patriots being wrongfully viewed as mutineers?

The following brilliant quotations could act like a lighthouse beacon that… if we’re lucky… if it isn’t already too late… will help get the U.S.S. America back on course… back to the safe harbor of sane, sagacious governance for some much needed repairs.

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out… because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out… because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out… because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me… and there was no one left to speak for me.”

— Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)

“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

— George Washington (1732 – 1799)

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

— George Santayana (1863 – 1962) *

* Frequently misquoted as: Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.

99 Word Blog (#031) Martin Niemöller’s Warning

Nazi concentration camp survivor Martin Niemöller spoke of how German citizens’ apathy, fearfulness and foolishness had empowered and emboldened Hitler. My demographic substitutions, personalization and (perhaps) clairvoyance update Niemöller’s “First They Came” speech…

First… President Trump targeted Hispanic immigrants for deportation… but we said nothing because we’re not Hispanic immigrants…

Next… Trump singled out the LGBT community… but we said nothing because we’re not homosexuals, bisexuals or transgendered…

Then… Trump trained crosshairs on Muslims… but we said nothing because we’re not Muslims…

Then… President Trump targeted you and me… and there was nobody left to speak out for us…

The Sect, Sex and Skin We’re In

“I read the news today”… and it was sad. Though the headline making Gee Oh Pee-ers were ludicrous… I was not… still am not… laughing… not when they’re prejudging folks based on Sect, Sexual Identity and Skin Tone.

To name names… we’re talking about the likes of the totally unlikeable North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory who has just signed legislation to forbid municipalities from banning discrimination against the LGBT community.

To name other names… we’re talking about the reprehensible, un-presidential presidential wannabes Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and how they’re demanding the wholesale surveillance, round up, detention and torture of Muslims.

These odious, odorous Right Wing politicians, many of them DRESSED FOR REGRESS in their white sheets… and accessorized with similarly hued pointy hoods… are attempting to drag our society down to their level… cause us to free-fall countless rungs lower on the human evolutionary ladder… plunge us all into their “home-sweet-home”, bottomless pit of putrid, primordial goo.

Suffice to say, unlike the abovementioned Righties, we the educated critical thinkers, fully understand that there is one AND ONLY ONE acceptable way to categorize humanity… namely… truly get to know people… observe them… read about them and then ask ourselves, “Are they GOOD or BAD?”

Based on what I’ve been seeing / reading about GOP Land, it is the rare exception to find a Republican who is not outright BAD!

So, why am I, a straight, Caucasian, lapsed Catholic getting so worked up over discrimination involving sexual orientation, race and religion?

Well, Martin Niemöller can answer that Q far better than I. Said he…

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Folks, with only minor modifications, what Niemöller had  once stated so eloquently, boldly marches forward into our 21st century… check it out…

First they came for the Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders — and I did not speak out — Because I was not Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender.

Then they came for the African-Americans and Hispanics — and I did not speak out — Because I was not an African-American or Hispanic.

Then they came for the Muslims and Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Muslim or a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.
