If you’ll excuse the irresistible wordplay… let’s shoot the breeze.
Most of us are aware of the NRA’s mantra:
“The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.”
Now… if… and let’s make that a big IF, here… IF their claim is true… this begs the question…
Just exactly how many “good guy” NRA members have fought in urban warzones… courageously whipped out their “pieces” to restore peace during those tense, every-second-counts / let’s-save-innocent-lives moments? Or stated less delicately… how many of these “gutsy” NRA “good guys” have blown away the “bad guys” prior to the real cops arriving on the scene?
Doncha think we need to know this impressive tally as well as the individual names of the heroic who’ve perhaps, singlehandedly, stopped terrorists, snipers and mass murderers dead in their tracks? You know… so we could honor them with tickertape parades down Main Street USA? Pin medals of valor to their chests? Hand them the keys to their respective cities? At the very least… wouldn’t you think that our thank-you notes and cards are in order? Perhaps even long overdue?
I mean… we don’t want them to wind up thinking that we’re ingrates… now do we?
Being one who believes in giving credit where credit is due, I decided to rev up the search engines Google, Yahoo, Bing and DuckDuckGo… where I typed in the following…
identify, by name, the NRA members who’ve used their guns
to stop terrorists, snipers and mass murderers
Folks, guess how many names turned up?
Zero… as in Zero Heroes
Now… that’s damned odd. One would think that this type of story would be right at the very tippy top of the list. But… nobody at all? How could that possibly be?
Consider this “Fun Fact”. In 2013, National Rifle Association chief executive Wayne LaPierre made the claim that the NRA’s active membership stood at 4.5 million. With an organization as sizable as that, somebody, at some point or another, must’ve stepped in… just in the nick of time… to save the day.
Perhaps the media has been remiss in naming names? Naw… how could that be? FOX News would’ve been “all over” stories like that… doncha think?
Or… maybe everyone belonging to the NRA is simply too humble… i.e., they prefer to remain unsung heroes? Naw… not with their bigger than Mt. Rushmore, sized heads.
Oh… I know… might these guys be so successful in stopping the bad guys that nobody ever even finds out about it… i.e., the bad guys never manage to fire off one single shot? Naw… once again… NRA types would be strutting all over the barnyard… crowing how they had emerged victorious.
So, that means we must talk about the real reason why all four search engines stalled out / could name no names. That’s because there are no names to name. To get real, here…
When terrorists, snipers and mass murderers open fire, NRA members tuck tail and run.
Oh… that’s not entirely true… those who don’t run have probably crapped their pants.
Truth is, NRA members, for the most part, don’t actually want to take active roles in policing our society. And, this is wise, too. While they may’ve taken gun safety classes so they don’t wind up stupidly blasting holes in their own feet (and other anatomical structures)… they likely realize that they don’t possess PHDs in human psychology… and as such… they know they’re clueless as to how to actually cope with “bad guys”, who are oft daft… and as such… are not acting / reacting like “normal” human beings.
Truth is, I am commending… NOT CONDEMNING… the NRA loyal for running to safety. After all… said Falstaff in William Shakespeare’s King Henry the Fourth, Part One…
“Discretion is the better part of valor. Caution is preferable to rash bravery.”
So… as for what we’ve proven here, today…
The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to never, ever let a bad guy have a gun. And since good guys, in possession of guns, accomplish very little, anyway…
Why not delegate the responsibility of stopping the bad guys to the trained, professional law enforcers?
